The Plot Of Hum Saath Saath Hain

Hum Saath Saath Hain (English: We Stand United) is a story of a happy and loving joint family that faces a crisis when their matriarch tries to split the family and separate the brothers. The film is inspired by the Hindu epic Ramayana, where the eldest son Ram is banished from his kingdom by his stepmother Kaikeyi. The film also draws parallels from the Mahabharata, where the Pandavas are exiled by their cousins, the Kauravas.

The film revolves around Ramkishen (Alok Nath), a wealthy businessman, and his wife Mamta (Reema Lagoo), who have four children: Vivek (Mohnish Bahl), Prem (Salman Khan), Vinod (Saif Ali Khan), and Sangeeta (Neelam Kothari). Vivek is the eldest son, who is adopted by Ramkishen from his first wife, who died in childbirth. Prem and Vinod are the biological sons of Ramkishen and Mamta, while Sangeeta is their daughter. The family lives in a palatial mansion in Rajasthan, along with Ramkishen's younger brother Anand (Mahesh Thakur) and his wife Sangita (Sadashiv Amrapurkar).

The film begins with a grand celebration of Vivek's engagement to Sadhana (Tabu), the daughter of Ramkishen's friend and business partner Adarsh (Satish Shah). Everyone is happy and excited for the wedding, except for Mamta, who feels insecure about Vivek's status as an adopted son. She fears that Vivek will inherit most of the property and business, leaving Prem and Vinod with nothing. She confides her worries to her three scheming sisters-in-law: Jyoti (Ajit Vachani's wife), Meena (Dilip Dhawan's wife), and Preeti (Kunika). They manipulate her into believing that Vivek is not worthy of being the heir and that he should be separated from the family.

Mamta decides to divide the property and business among her three sons, leaving Vivek with nothing. She asks Ramkishen to do so, but he refuses, saying that he loves all his sons equally and that Vivek is his pride and joy. He tries to convince Mamta that she is wrong, but she remains adamant. She even threatens to leave him if he does not agree to her demand. Ramkishen is heartbroken and helpless, as he does not want to lose either his wife or his son.

Vivek overhears their conversation and decides to sacrifice his share for the sake of his parents' happiness. He tells Ramkishen that he will leave the house after his wedding with Sadhana and start a new life elsewhere. He also asks him not to tell anyone about this decision. Ramkishen reluctantly agrees, but he is proud of Vivek's selflessness and maturity.

Meanwhile, Prem falls in love with Preeti (Sonali Bendre), Adarsh's niece, who comes to stay with them for the wedding. Vinod also falls in love with Sapna (Karisma Kapoor), Anand's daughter, who returns from abroad after completing her studies. Both Prem and Vinod get their respective love interests' approval from their parents and plan to get married soon.

However, things take a turn for the worse when Mamta's sisters-in-law reveal Vivek's decision to everyone on the day of his wedding. They accuse him of being greedy and selfish, and try to create a rift between him and his brothers. They also instigate Mamta to insult Sadhana and her family, saying that they are poor and unworthy of being associated with them. This leads to a heated argument between Mamta and Adarsh, who decides to call off the wedding and leave with Sadhana.

Vivek is shocked and hurt by his mother's behavior and his brothers' silence. He apologizes to Sadhana and her family, and leaves with them. He also renounces his share of the property and business, saying that he does not want anything from his family. He moves to a small house in a village with Sadhana, where he starts working as a mechanic.

Prem and Vinod are also upset by their mother's actions and their brother's departure. They try to convince Mamta to change her mind, but she refuses to listen. They also try to contact Vivek, but he does not respond. They feel guilty and angry for not supporting him when he needed them.

As time passes, Vivek faces many hardships in his new life, but he remains optimistic and hopeful. He also maintains a cordial relationship with Sadhana's family, who treat him as their own son. He earns their respect and admiration for his honesty and integrity.

On the other hand, Ramkishen falls ill due to stress and depression. He misses Vivek terribly and wishes to see him again. He also regrets not standing up for him against Mamta. He also realizes that he has been unfair to Sadhana and her family, who have been nothing but kind and generous to him and his son.

Mamta, on the other hand, remains stubborn and arrogant. She does not care about Vivek or Ramkishen's health. She only cares about her own sons and their happiness. She also tries to interfere in their love lives, by trying to arrange their marriages with other girls of her choice. She does not approve of Preeti or Sapna, as she thinks they are not suitable for her sons.

Prem and Vinod are fed up with their mother's attitude and behavior. They decide to rebel against her and follow their hearts. They elope with Preeti and Sapna, respectively, and get married in a temple. They also join Vivek in his village, where they are welcomed by Sadhana and her family. They apologize to Vivek for their mistake and express their love and respect for him. They also promise to support him in his endeavors.

Vivek is overjoyed to see his brothers and their wives. He forgives them and embraces them. He is also happy to see that they have chosen their life partners wisely and that they are happy with them. He blesses them and wishes them all the best.

The film ends with a happy reunion of the entire family, except for Mamta, who is left alone and isolated. Ramkishen recovers from his illness and travels to the village with Anand, Sangita, Sangeeta, Adarsh, and Jeevan (Shakti Kapoor), a family friend. They meet Vivek, Prem, Vinod, Sadhana, Preeti, Sapna, and their children. They celebrate Diwali together, with songs, dances, fireworks, and prayers. Ramkishen apologizes to Sadhana and her family for the trouble he caused them. He also praises Vivek for his courage and sacrifice. He declares that he is proud of all his sons and that he loves them equally. He also announces that he has decided to give equal shares of his property and business to all his sons, as well as his daughters-in-law. He says that he wants them to live together as a united family.

Mamta realizes her folly and regrets her actions. She decides to mend her ways and seek forgiveness from her husband and sons. She arrives at the village with a repentant heart and a humble attitude. She apologizes to Vivek and Sadhana for her insults and mistreatment. She also apologizes to Prem and Vinod for trying to separate them from their wives. She asks them to forgive her and accept her as their mother again.

Vivek, Prem, Vinod, Sadhana, Preeti, Sapna, and Ramkishen are touched by Mamta's change of heart and sincerity. They forgive her and embrace her. They also invite her to join them in their celebration. Mamta is grateful and happy to be reunited with her family. She thanks God for giving her a second chance.

The film ends with a message of love, unity, harmony, and peace among all the members of the family.
