[S4E2] Love Addiction

Picking up where "A Change is Gonna Come" left off, a sexy Meredith and Derek are enjoying life as friends with benefits... or as they call it, S&M (sex and mockery). But Derek, like everyone else on the show on this night, is fighting an addiction that's very difficult to break.

It's all about addictions, for better or for worse, and as the episode begins, George is elated after telling Izzie he loves her too. He admits marrying Callie happened too fast, and resolves to end it. Izzie is very happy to hear this, but changes her tune later when Callie is mean to her in the operating room.

George calls a code blue when a patient who was at the meth lab, Clark, crashes. This episode is very much about literal addictions as well. An addiction to meth is serious, and Clark begins to go through withdrawal. Surgery might still be an option for him, though, but eventually his internal bleeding is too much for his body to take and he dies.

[narrating] In the hospital, we see addiction every day. It's shocking how many kinds of addiction exist. It would be too easy if it were just drugs and booze and cigarettes. I think the hardest part of kicking a habit is wanting to kick it. I mean, we get addicted for a reason, right? Often, too often, things that start out as just a normal part of your life at some point cross the line to obsessive, compulsive, out of control. It's the high we're chasing, the high that makes everything else fade away.

Jane: When you stood up in front of Preston's friends and loved ones and you said, "It's over. It's over. It's so over" were you trying to smash the hopes of the best man, or were you just trying to be funny?

Jane: You're already married? George O'Malley...Burke's friend, Burke's guy...staying in a marriage out of obligation? That's no way to live. That's no way to love. But I think you know that.

Meredith: We don't have the same dad, Lexie. You and I, we do not have the same dad. My dad disappeared when I was 5 years old, and I never saw him again. Does that sound like the daddy you grew up with? I kicked a man out of my bed in the middle of the night...the world's most perfect man, who loves me, and I can't let him. And it doesn't take a shrink to figure out why. Because our dad chose you. So I'm sure you are a very nice girl, Lexie. But I hope you can understand, you're not a girl I ever wanted to have to know.

Jane: And I wanted to say I'm sorry. I... I've come to know you, I think. And what you love even more than Preston is being a surgeon. You are planning to continue with cardiothoracic surgery like my son, am I correct?

George tells Izzie it wasn't right to get married. They lean in to kiss, but George stops. He has to go tell Callie that the marriage is over, as it's the right thing to do. He walks out, but comes back in and asks if she saw how determined he was. She did, and it made her proud. He really leaves now and Izzie happily tells herself that he loves her, too.

George is genuinely surprised to see Jane in the waiting room. He introduces himself as Burke's guy. He sits down and tells Jane that Burke let him sleep on his sofa when he had no place to stay. George asks her how Burke is doing. She replies Burke is a gentleman so he doesn't like to talk about it, and she doesn't know what to say to him. George suggests to tell him that he dodged a bullet. Once you're in a marriage, you're in. George knows Burke avoided a mistake. You can't take back a marriage. George admits he's married already. Jane says staying in a marriage out of obligation is no way to live or love, but she thinks George knows that. He does, sometimes.

Alex is working on a crying Brian. His IV came out and he needs to be hydrated. Dave is freaking out. He'd like an update on his wife. Alex says the recovery will be long and difficult if she makes it off the table. Dave yells at his son to stop crying. Alex tells him he can't, because his nervous system is shut and his organs are compromised because he's in withdrawal from crystal meth. Dave says that's impossible, as Brian wasn't in the room. Alex says it was all over the apartment; he could smell it on Brian's skin. Dave says he loves his son. They were broke, but he doesn't use drugs. He loves his family. Alex says he can do that from jail. Dave suddenly knocks Alex out and leaves the room with his son.

Derek sits down with Jane in the waiting room. Derek says Burke has stopped returning his phone calls. Jane says he's doing his best. She wonders if Cristina really loved him. Derek says she loved him the best she knew how. That wouldn't have been enough for him either. Derek says Burke is stronger than he is. Jane says honorable men are all built the same. Derek is not so sure he is one. She asks if he knows when to walk away, when not to take less than he deserves. If so, he is.

Lexie tells Meredith she's a nice person. She doesn't know what it is she did to Meredith, but they have the same dad. Meredith says they don't. Meredith's dad disappeared when she was 5 years old, and she never saw him again. That's not the man Lexie grew up with. Meredith says she can't let a perfect man love her. It's because Thatcher chose his new family over her. Meredith is sure Lexie is a nice person, but she's not someone Meredith ever wanted to have to get to know.

Cristina finally arrives in the waiting room. Jane says she came for Preston's key. She'd like to pick up some of his things and the necklace she gave Cristina for the wedding. Cristina gives her the key and tells her to leave it under the mat when she's done. Jane wanted to tell Cristina she's sorry. She's come to know Cristina. What she loves even more than Preston is being a surgeon. She's sorry that Cristina lost the man she loves, but even more so that she lost her teacher. With him by her side, she could have become a brilliant heart surgeon. Jane says Cristina is strong and she respects that. She wishes she could've been born in another time so she could've been more like Cristina. Cristina asks her to also take all the wedding gifts. Jane promises she will. Cristina realizes Burke is never coming back, not even to say goodbye. Jane tells her to remember that she's a strong woman.

This week, we have two incredible divorce stories from the entertainment world. First up, Stacie has the 2015 split of celebrity chef Bobby Flay and Law and Order: SVU actress Stephanie March. This divorce is one of the ways that Stacie learned to love divorce stories.

If Sergio Leone had grown up in a meth den, he would've loved this week's episode of Breaking Bad. Those extreme close-ups of Walt's face mimicked the opening shots of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Those tense silences before Walt drew his gun were straight out of Fistful of Dollars. So much of it felt like a Western, right down to the High Noon standoff, with our hero casting a long shadow, and pulling down the brim of his hat as he approached his archenemy.

During his years doing his degree at college, he tried lots of different drugs and ended up getting hooked on heroin. Around 10 years later, he became homeless due to his addiction. One night, he was in a line and he met Jacqueline. The two instantly hit it off and she helped him out by getting him off of the drugs and back to college to finish his degree. The two eventually got married and had a daughter, Stella. One night around 2013, Isaac came home and found his daughter dead on the floor of her room. He saw that she had found his stash of K-pex and overdosed. He instantly started doing CPR to try and revive her. After a while, he realized that she wasn't coming back. Isaac thought about what this would do to his wife and flushed the drugs down the toilet and sent a suicide note to her to make it look as if the death was intentional when in reality it is unknown whether she intentionally overdosed or did it by accident. He then called the police around 15 minutes after he had initially found her body. Not long after, the case was ruled a suicide under mysterious circumstances. Isaac later separated from his wife as he struggled to get over the loss of his daughter. Isaac stopped using again and begun seeing his ex-wife for therapy as he never truly got over the loss of his daughter. ("Stay Strong, Mama", "Ask Him About Stella")

Isaac later confronts Jacqueline, declaring that she is putting Annalise's sobriety at risk. Jacqueline doesn't care for Annalise, she did it as she thinks that he is close to using again. Isaac confesses that he hasn't actually thought about using until the moment which she brought it up. Isaac then asks her whether she did it out of jealousy because she was still in love with him. Jacqueline reminds him that they have both moved on, however, Isaac continues with his accusations against Jacqueline until she throws it back in his face by saying that because he is saying all of the things is the exact reason why she did it. Back at his office, Annalise visits and Isaac apologizes for putting her in the situation that resulted in her feeling like she had to change therapists. Isaac asks her whether she would like to report him, however, Annalise refuses to do so as she relates to his situation. Annalise then admits that she would like to keep seeing him. Isaac explains that she cannot, to which Annalise uses to confirm what Jacqueline said was true, that she is triggering him to justify why he will not become her therapist again. Isaac explains that because she knows so much information about himself is the reason why he cannot continue as her therapist. Annalise tells him that he helps her. She then receives a phone call and leaves the room to take it. Not long after, Isaac goes to see whether she is alright, to which she replies with that she has to leave. ("Live. Live. Live.") 041b061a72
